National Assembly summons Education CS for grilling session

The National Assembly Committee on Education is set to meet with Education Cabinet Secretary Hon. Ezekiel Machogu and Ministry of Education officials on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024. The meeting aims to address concerns arising from the recent communication on the postponement of school dates for the second term.

Chaired by Hon. Julius Melly from Tinderet, the Committee members expressed deep concern regarding the Ministry’s last-minute decision to delay the school opening due to ongoing flooding. This sudden communication has led to confusion and has had adverse effects on parents and school-going children.

“This is an urgent matter. We will meet with the Education CS and relevant ministry officials. We need answers,” stated Hon. Julius Melly, emphasizing the critical nature of the issue.

Hon. Nabii Nabwera from Lugari and Hon. Jerusha Momanyi from Nyamira County echoed the sentiments of the Chairperson, highlighting the significant disruption caused by the last-minute announcement.

“The abrupt announcement to delay the school term caused significant disruption for many families,” remarked Hon. Abdul Haro from Mandera North.

Additionally, the Committee plans to engage with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) regarding the status of Junior Secondary School teachers a discussion that follows a court order that prohibits TSC from recruiting and employing student teachers and interns, as its constitutional and statutory mandate is limited to the employment of duly qualified and registered teachers.
